Middlesborough drug driver tries to escape from Tesco

This is the shocking moment a banned drug driver tried to escape from a supermarket car park with a policeman desperately clinging onto the bonnet.

CCTV footage shows Corey Travis, 24, trying to speed out of the Tesco store in Middlesborough on June 2.

As he screeches into reverse the officer can be seen holding onto the front of the Ford Focus before being flung onto the tarmac.

The policeman had been standing outside the shop in Coulby Newham and put out his hand signalling for Travis to stop.

But instead of doing as he was asked or trying to dodge him, the convict drove towards him revving his engine.

The officer decided to grab the bonnet, fearing he might get away, Teeside Crown Court heard.

But realising the offender was not going to stop, he released his grip, throwing him back on to the tarmac hitting his head and elbow.

He was caught shortly afterwards when members of the public spotted him ‘driving erratically’.

The officer suffered concussion, bruising and a sprained ankle.

At the time Travis was already on bail for a string of other crimes, and he admitted two counts of dangerous driving, assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm, drug driving, driving while disqualified and without insurance.

He also admitted breaching a non-molestation order twice by following his ex-partner of five years shouting abuse, turning up at her home and kicking her door.

Judge Howard Crowson jailed Travis of Hemlington, Middlesborough for four years and two months and banned him from driving for five years and one month.

Prosecuting, Rachel Masters told the court: ‘The defendant placed it into first gear, setting off again and powering forward.’

In a statement, the officer said he was ‘very proud to protect and serve’ and it was his second injury on duty in 18 months.

He said he had been punched, kicked, spat at and verbally abused, and took it as ‘part of the job’.

He bore no malice towards Travis, but said he hoped his punishment would fit the crime.

Judge Howard Crowson said the collision with the 73-year-old man’s car ‘could have been a great deal worse’, while it was lucky that the PC was thrown off to the side.

‘We could have been dealing with a very different case,’ he added.
