The show, set in the village of Little Upton, featured three people killed and staged to look like scarecrows amid the area’s Scarecrow Festival, organised to raise money for the village church.

While viewers were impressed by the new episode, they were also scared by the recurrent scarecrows in the scenes, in keeping with the competition and the episode title.

One person wrote: ‘Not a fan of the creepy scarecrows just lingering in the back of some of these shots. Kinda menacing!’

Another agreed, writing: ‘I don’t know what’s worse… creepy clowns or creepy scarecrows.’

And a third said: ‘Of all the episodes of Midsomer Murders that they could have aired this week, of course its one with scarecrows in.’

Following Naomi, villagers Oscar and Thea were also murdered – with the victims all involved with Ventuity, an online casino.

Naomi was the PR person for the casino, while Oscar was a major shareholder and Thea was the customer relations manager. However, the company had ruined certain people’s lives in the village.

DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) had to question the villagers and get to the bottom of who was killing people and turning them into scarecrows.

Midsomer Murders first aired in 1997, with John Nettles in the lead role of DCI John Barnaby, who was replaced by Neil Dudgeon in 2011.
