Miley Cyrus has revealed that her godmother and collaborator Dolly Parton wasn’t a fan of her last musical era.

While speaking with music journalist Zane Lowe, the 32-year-old pop star — whose dad Billy Ray Cyrus filmed a tornado in Nashville on Wednesday — said the 79-year-old country music icon ‘didn’t love’ her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation.

The revelation came as Cyrus recalled that Parton wasn’t impressed when she first played her the song Something Beautiful, from her forthcoming LP of the same name.

Miley shared about the Jolene singer, ‘She goes: “Alright, I see what you’re doing. [But] you got any hits?”

‘She didn’t love my Vacation era either,’ the former child star admitted. ‘She’s like, “Everyone’s asking me where you are and I’m wondering the same thing. Every day it’s just you in a bikini, but like, what are you gonna do?”‘

The former Hannah Montana sensation said she tried to explain to her godmother that at that point she was ‘already working on something else,’ to which Dolly rebuked: ‘That’s not what you do with a project!’

She also detailed how her music mentor inspired two songs on her upcoming album in a surprising way.

As Parton pushed to hear more new music during a car ride two years ago, Cyrus found herself pretending to have already written a pair of songs, even though she only had vague ideas for them.

The Flowers singer said she had a song called More to Lose: ‘[I] had not written it yet. But I knew the title. I was like, “I’ll send it to you.” And she goes, “Well, you got any more?” I was like, “Well…”

The Tennessee native enlisted songwriter Michael Pollack to help her quickly pen the tune, and she later presented it to Dolly, who once again pressed her for more music.

That’s when Miley unveiled the song Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved, which had also not yet come to fruition.

‘She goes, “Damn.” She’s like, “I love that title, that should be your everything. You should have a makeup line, all these things.” I’m like, “Oh yeah, no, I am, I’m working on it,”‘ Miley fibbed.

She said to Apple music’s Zane, ‘So all because of her did those two songs ever get created.’

It comes after last year the former Disney actress shared with Harper’s Bazaar that Dolly took issue with her single Used to Be Young, which was included on her Endless Summer Vacation album.

‘She goes, “I don’t know if I like that new Used to Be Young song because it’s not fair that you’re singing about not being young when you’re young and beautiful.”

‘She said, “And here I am — I’m like 80 — and I’m like, That should have been my song!”‘ Cyrus spilled to the outlet.

Despite Dolly’s objections, the song and album were a hit with fans and critics.

Used to Be Young reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2023, and the album’s lead single Flowers earned Miley her first Grammy win.
