Miley Cyrus reveals she has been sober for six months

Miley Cyrus has opened up about being six months sober.

The pop star, 27, was partly inspired to clean up her lifestyle after learning about her family history of addiction and mental health struggles.

‘I’ve been sober sober for the past six months,’ she told Variety’s The Big Ticket podcast. ‘At the beginning, it was just about this vocal surgery… But I had been thinking a lot about my mother.

‘By understanding the past, we understand the present’: Miley Cyrus was partly inspired to clean up her lifestyle after learning about her family history of addiction and mental health struggles

‘My mom was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you’re wanted and valuable.

‘My dad’s parents divorced when he was 3, so my dad raised himself. I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, “Why am I the way that I am?” By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great.’

Miley admitted it could be challenging to be sober as a young person due to peer pressure.

But the advantages of being clean far outweighed waking up with a hangover.

‘It’s really hard because especially being young, there’s that stigma of “you’re no fun.” It’s like, “honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun.” The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time. I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.’

Still, Miley loves to poke fun at her parents, whom she referred to as ‘the biggest stoners.’

Asked if there was anything she was shocked to have once said, Miley replied, ‘One of my favorite interviews is when I say, “Anyone that smokes weed is a dummy.” That one I love to send to my parents, who are big stoners, every now and then.’

Miley also discussed how her house burning down in the Woolsey Fire intersected with playing pop star Ashley O on Black Mirror.

Miley played a singer who was placed into a coma after her food was laced with medication, and the star channeled the loss of her house into her character.

‘When Ashley wakes up from the coma and it’s totally traumatic, that was the day that I had lost my house in Malibu to the fires,’ she revealed. ‘I was able to pull from that trauma and use that in the scene.

‘There were times that I had to stop and just go outside and totally melt down. It was just a really interesting time for me because so much was falling apart in my personal life, and it was the same thing that was happening in Ashley’s life. It gave me a lot to use.’

Miley related a lot to her character, whose manager was her ultra controlling aunt who put the medication in her food.

‘The main difference to me is I don’t have an Aunt Catherine,’ Miley said. ‘My mom has been my momager. I’m almost freaking 30, and I don’t buy a lightbulb for my house without asking my mom if it’s the right one.

‘Without my parents I bet my life would’ve been more similar to the Ashley O story. The thing that really makes me different than Ashley are my parents and the team that my parents put around me.’

‘Like when I was looking for a manager, we got whoever Dolly (Parton) told me would be protective over me. It didn’t have to do with, “he’s going to make you star.” It was, “you’re going to feel comfortable with your child traveling with him and he’s going to take care of her and respect [your] values.”

Miley also shared the advice she gave to a young Justin Bieber when she was just a teenager.

‘I remember I was sitting in front of him at his movie premiere. I was 16, something like that. He leaned up to me and asked for advice in a very mellow, friendly way. I said, “Just try to remember everything, try to press record in your brain and remember everything because there are so many moments of my life when my mom will be like, ‘do you remember when you got to perform for the queen?’

‘And I’m like,  ‘no.'” There was so much going, so much to take in as such a young person that I didn’t remember to take everything in. That’s something my dad always taught me, was when you’re on stage, whether it’s when you get there or when you’re about to leave, take a picture in your mind. And remember it, and savor it, and take it in.’

As for a potential collaboration between Justin and Miley’s Ashley O alter ego, the singer revealed there is nothing in the works now.
