Minnesota state park sees two deaths on the same day

  • Both died of their injuries and neither name will be released until their families are notified

Two people died in recreational accidents within five miles of Tettegouche State Park in Minnesota on Sunday.

A 14-year-old girl died when she slipped off a cliff on the North Shore of Lake Superior.

A couple hours later a 76-year-old man died in an ATV crash near Finland, Minnesota.

Around 1pm, the 14-year-old girl fell from the top of a cliff while visiting Palisade Head with friends. 

Palisade Head is a large rock formation on the North Shore, near Silver Bay. Its highest point is more than 300 feet above the water level.

Bystanders rappelled down the cliff to provide first aid. The girl was taken by helicopter to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

Her name is being withheld until family can be notified. 

Just before 3pm on the same day, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office received another 911 call reporting an ATV crash. 

Responders arrived on the scene to perform lifesaving measures on the 76-year-old man, but he died of his injuries.

The man’s name also is being withheld until family members can be notified. 

The last fatal fall from Palisade Head occurred in 2010, when Margaret O’Leary, 48, slipped off the cliff.
