Former Pittsburgh Pirates star Josh Harrison has called time on his career – 14 years to the day since his Major League debut.

The 37-year-old was a two-time All-Star who also spent time with the Tigers, Nationals, Athletics, White Sox and Phillies.

The third baseman, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the 2008 draft.

He made his MLB debut for the Pirates against the New York Mets on May 31, 2011. His final game came against Pittsburgh – for the Phillies – back in July 2023.

Nearly two years on, Harrison announced his retirement from baseball in a touching statement on social media.

‘This ride was nothing short of amazing!’ he wrote before paying tribute to his parents.

‘Thank you for the sacrifices, long drives, encouragement, support, and love. None of those things went unnoticed, that’s why whether I had a good game or a bad game, my first calls were always to you, mom and dad.’

Harrison also thanked his two brothers, his wife Brittney – ‘my rock through every season, every city, every win, every loss’ – and his daughters, Mia and Kinsli.

‘Your smiles and hugs after every game always put thigs in perspective,’ Harrison wrote.

‘I’m blessed to have been a 2x All-Star and to play for as long as I did, but I never sought to prove people wrong, only to prove myself right in my beliefs.

‘With that being said, future players don’t get other people’s expectations of you limit you from reaching your full potential. Put in the work and go get what you deserve.’
