The screen star recently spoke of how issues such as racism, sexism, and homophobia within her famous 80s movies now makes her feel uneasy.
Speaking on SiriusXM with Andy Cohen in October, Ringwald explained: ‘My 12-year-old daughter Adele is the most woke individual that you’ve ever met, and I just don’t know how I’m gonna go through that, you know, watching it with her and [her] saying, ‘How could you do that? How could you be part of something that…”
‘There’s elements to those films that I find homophobic, but on the other hand, they’re also about people that felt like outsiders. They speak to a lot of people. They’re complicated. I feel like that’s what makes the movies really wonderful.’

In an open letter written for The New Yorker in 2018, Ringwald wrote that she found it problematic that ‘the words ‘f**’ and ‘f*****’ are tossed around with abandon’ in the film, The Breakfast Club.
She also noted the misogyny that is depicted in the cult classic, explaining how Bender sexually harasses her character Claire throughout the film,
She said: ‘When he’s not sexualizing her, he takes out his rage on her with vicious contempt, calling her pathetic, mocking her as ‘Queenie.’
‘It’s rejection that inspires his vitriol…He never apologizes for any of it, but, nevertheless, he gets the girl in the end.’
