Mom who adopted baby at age 49 after suffering from miscarriages faces horrific shaming from trolls

A mother who adopted a baby at age 49 after struggling with infertility and suffering from multiple miscarriages has faced horrific online shaming from trolls who called her ‘selfish’ for becoming a mom at such an ‘old age’ and told her she’s most likely going to ‘die’ before her daughter grows up.

Kris Monsour, now 51, from Canal Winchester, Ohio, always wanted to become a mom, and she spent more than a decade trying.

Unfortunately, Kris was unable to successfully conceive, and by 2019 – after suffering from numerous miscarriages – she had nearly given up on her dream of having a baby.

But then, Kris received a text message from her cousin that changed her life forever. The relative, who was in recovery for an addiction, told Kris that she was pregnant and asked her if she wanted to adopt the baby.

She and her husband Clay, 47, officially adopted their daughter, Ainsley, now two, in March 2020.

Kris, who works as a executive insurance director, recently decided to share her journey online, but was stunned when she began to receive a ton of backlash for her decision to become a mom at the age of 49.

Kris has received hundreds of nasty comments from people who have slammed her for raising a baby while in her 50s, including one who said she will be a ‘geriatric parent’ before Ainsley graduates high school, and another who claimed the toddler will have to ‘decide on her mom and dad’s nursing home’ at the age of 20.

But then, Kris received a text message from her cousin, who told her that she was pregnant and asked her if she wanted to adopt the baby

The mom-of-one has responded to her haters in numerous videos posted to her TikTok account, where she has racked up more than 159,000 followers and nine million likes.

‘Just a few comments I have received as an older mom on this app,’ she wrote in one video, while showing off some of the awful messages that she has gotten.

‘I don’t agree with this at all. Think about the child!’ one of them read.

Another said, ‘When your child reaches the age of 18, you will be close to 70. Most people that age lose the ability to 100 per cent take care of themselves.’

‘Think about you dying when she will be 20,’ added a different hater.

‘Luckily for me, I refuse to absorb toxic comments,’ Kris added in the video. ‘I am too busy doing things that feed my soul. For many, though, words hurt. Think before you comment.’

’49 is too old to adopt a baby. You are halfway dead,’ she wrote in another TikTok, while quoting some more common comments that she has received.

The clip showed her carrying little Ainsley while pretending to be tired and frail.

‘Me at 49, living life,’ she then added, as she changed her posture, stood up straight, and marched strongly towards the camera.

In a third video, she responded to a commenter who called her ‘selfish’ for adopting a baby at her age. The disgruntled viewer added that Ainsley is most likely going to ‘struggle’ due to her ‘old parents.’

‘Not only do you not know our story, but it’s obvious that you’re unfamiliar with the statistics around adoption in the United States,’ Kris responded.

‘The average age of adoptive parents in the U.S. is 45. Are all adoptive parents selfish?

‘My daughter is related to me, she is my cousin three times removed. Her mom, my cousin, was newly in recovery and reached out to my husband and myself when she was pregnant and asked if we would adopt her daughter.’

In a separate video, Kris responded to someone else who claimed that by the time Ainsley is 18, Kris will be too old to do anything with her.

The mom-of-one called the comment ‘ageist’ and ‘ridiculous,’ before showing a clip of her own father, who is in his 70s, dancing with her daughter.

’70-year-olds lead active lives and I intend to as well,’ she added in the caption.

And when another commenter said that she was going to ‘die’ when her daughter was in her 20s, she fired back, ‘I appreciate you doing basic math and predicting my death.

‘I obviously know I am 51 and that I will be 68 when she is 20. Look at me, do you think I do not know my own age? I plan to live to be at least 100.’

‘Since you are predicting my [death], could you tell me the lottery numbers for tomorrow?’ she also wrote in the caption.

‘Me, excited to share my journey on social media as a first time, older mom,’ Kris wrote in a different TikTok, while looking excitedly towards the camera.

Her face then dropped as an array of more unpleasant comments flashed across the screen.

‘Send her back to her real mom,’ read one of them, while another said, ‘She will hate you.’

‘You are going to die,’ a third unkind message said.

‘You’ll be in a nursing home,’ wrote another hateful person.

She also pointed out in a different TikTok that many celebrities are becoming parents at an older age – especially male stars – adding that it’s unfair that they don’t receive as much hate for it.

‘I’ve been called selfish and egotistical, and was told I’m gonna die. I’m 51. I have a lot of life left,’ she said.

‘What amazes me is I don’t see wealthy people, or rock stars – folks in the public eye who are a lot older than I and have a penis – get trolled about having children later in life.’

She explained that singer Elton John, 75 – who has a nine-year-old son and an 11-year-old son – is often ‘applauded,’ while ‘women, like her, get trolled.’

In some videos, Kris has made light of the malicious comments.

‘Bored so I’m gonna post a video of my 51-year-old self and my two-year-old, happy and existing, so I can be trolled for my age,’ she joked in one.

Another showed her wearing a gray wig, glasses, and a scarf over her head.

‘What young people think 40-50-year-olds look like,’ she captioned it.

And despite all backlash she has received online, the mom-of-one said in another video that she is ‘so thankful’ to have her daughter, adding that she ‘would not change anything about her journey.’

‘Three years ago today, I got a text that would change my life forever,’ she wrote.

‘I was 48, and after multiple miscarriages, had accepted that I might never be a mom.

‘The text said, “Kris. Did you and Clay still want to adopt?” We prayed, we talked, we accepted the blessing. We said yes.

‘When I finally became a mom, I felt whole. I have always known being a mom was my destiny.

‘You see, I just needed to let go and trust. My cup is so full. I cherish every day. I am so thankful. Never give up hope.’

And Kris does receive some supportive messages too. One viewer wrote on one of her viral videos, ‘I bet you’re an amazing mama.’

Another added, ‘Wow, reading the comments I can’t believe how wanting a child makes you a bad mother. “Lose you early” – people die everyday at any age at any time.’

‘Everyone is saying she will die when the child is still young, a child is never ready for the death of a parent, regardless of age,’ said someone else.

A fourth comment read, ‘It breaks my heart that people think motherhood should only be for 20 somethings.’

‘Motherhood at any age is beautiful. Congrats mama, she is beautiful,’ agreed a different TikTok user.

Another person wrote, ‘For any woman who has tried for years and give up hope… Let her have this. No one is guaranteed a day on this Earth. Be happy… I wish it was me.’

In a previous interview, Kris opened up about the negative reaction from people online.

‘I shared my story via TikTok and had a lot of trolls come out of nowhere saying that I wasn’t suitable to be a mother, that I was too old, that I was being selfish,’ she said.

‘I’ve never seen it that way and know that a long life is never guaranteed no matter how young or old you are.

‘I do have some worries that I won’t see some of Ainsley’s achievements, but we’re taking everything one day at a time, and trying to live and thrive within every moment.

Kris explained that she considered using IVF during her first marriage, but the process was cut short when their relationship ended.

Kris said doctors told her that she should 'just stop trying' and that she 'was never going to be a mother' after suffering from two miscarriages. Her husband, Clay, is pictured with Ainsley

‘My ex-partner and I discussed IVF and other routes, but never went ahead with the process as our marriage ended up falling apart due to it being quite toxic,’ she recalled.

‘When I met my current husband, Clay, I got pregnant very quickly, but lost the baby at the three-month mark.

‘A doctor ended up basically telling me that I should just stop trying and that I was never going to be a mother. It was a huge gut punch, but I was determined to focus on my job.’

For seven years, the desire to become a mother never left Kris’ mind, and her dreams finally came true when her cousin messaged her out of the blue three years ago, and asked her if she wanted to take in her daughter.

‘We were there every step of the way during the pregnancy and the birth,’ added Kris.

‘We were there for the ultrasound, and at the hospital when she was born, I even got to cut the cord. We left the hospital with Ainsley, and we officially adopted her in March 2020.

‘The process was longwinded as there were lots of legal fees and we had to pay social services to come and do checks. The overall adoption process cost about $19,500 altogether.’
