Bizarre moment ‘thief’ is confronted by homeowners and ordered to drop a huge haul of stolen packages as she insists: ‘I was handing them to you’

  • Woman allegedly caught stealing items from residential complex in New Zealand
  • She then argued with two victims – who asked her to return the stolen items
  • Encounter was filmed and widely shared on social media, shocking many online

A woman accused of brazenly stealing a number of courier packages from residential letterboxes has been caught on camera arguing with a pair of her victims.

The alleged thief, from Auckland in New Zealand, bizarrely insisted she was simply ‘handing over’ the unwrapped packages after being confronted.

One clip shared on TikTok shows an exchange where the woman can be seen hurling one of the packages on the ground when interrogated by the frustrated couple.

The woman, who was wearing a black face mask, white top and black Adidas sports pants, then replied ‘good one’ when asked to give back another package she had placed in her handbag.

The patient victims went on to ask the alleged thief, who was also carrying a large sports bag, to place the items on the ground gently – but the fired-up prowler they dubbed ‘Karen’ refused to do so.

When the couple inform the woman the footage will be passed on to police, she can be heard replying: ‘I’m handing them (items) to you, what’s the problem?’

The video concludes with the lady swearing at the couple and giving them ‘the bird’, before leaving the complex on foot.

A number of people online were dumbfounded at the brazen attitude of the alleged thief.

‘Oh Karen will you ever learn, crime doesn’t pay,’ one said.

Another suggested ‘Report her to the police… these type of people have no empathy.’

In Australia, research from parcel-collection network Hubbed last year revealed 58 per cent of residents worry their parcels could be stolen when delivered in their absence.

A further 41 per cent believe they are not provided enough delivery options to ensure security of their items.

CEO and founder of Hubbed David McLean said looking at other options such as click and collect or having items sent to a work address are viable alternatives.

‘It is understandable that many Australians are concerned about the security of their parcels, given many have shifted their spending habits and turned to online shopping,’ he said.

‘Retailers should consider offering multiple delivery choices such as collection points and parcel lockers to alleviate fears around the security of deliveries.’

HOW TO KEEP YOUR PARCEL SAFE

1. Ship it to another location – If possible, have your packages shipped to another location instead of your home. Ship packages to your workplace if allowed, a parcel locker or to your neighbour’s house if they are frequently home.

2. Invest in affordable smart home security cameras – Smart home security cameras are now more affordable than ever.

If you set the smart cameras up around the front of your home, they will send an instant alert to your phone when the built-in motion sensors are activated so you’ll always know when a package is delivered or porch pirates are lurking.

Through the two-way talk and live HD video you can talk directly to them and safely keep an eye on your packages the whole day.

3. Invest in smart locks – For packages delivered to your home, consider investing in smart locks, which will allow you to open a door remotely for a delivery driver to leave a package inside a secure part of your home that you can coordinate through a smart home security camera.
