Moment emergency slide falls from United Airlines Boeing 767 into a Chicago back yard as plane lands on flight from Switzerland

  • Home surveillance cam shows the slide falling to earth on Monday in Chicago
  • No one was injured when the inflatable slide landed in a back yard
  • United and FAA are still investigating how the freak incident occurred

Newly emerged video footage appears the show the moment an inflatable emergency slide fell to earth from a commercial plane landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

No one was injured in the incident on Monday, when the slide fell from United Airlines Flight 12 into a Chicago home’s back yard before the plane landed safely on a flight from Switzerland.

Video from a home surveillance camera obtained by DailyMail.com shows the Boeing 767 pass briefly through the frame before an object comes fluttering down toward the ground.

The slide landed in the back yard of Patrick Devitt’s home on the 4700 block of North Chester, a quiet tree-lined residential street of single-family homes.

Devitt said he was driving home to his home on the city’s far northwest edge when his son and father-in-law, who were home at the time, ‘heard a loud boom hit the side of the house’ around noon.

Devitt told WLS-TV the pair initially didn’t think much of the noise until his father-in-law went outside and discovered the silver slide crumpled in the yard.

Neither one of them could not immediately identify what the slide was other than ‘obviously something that should not be there’ and called 911 after noticing fuel caps on the sides of the object.

Devitt dragged the slide from his backyard to the front. He said the slide hit part of the house, damaging the roof, downspout and a window screen.

‘When it’s all stretched out, like it’s a little jumbled up I’m sure in the picture from when we dragged it out, it´s larger than a small car. It’s a very, very big piece of equipment,’ Devitt said.

Following the incident, United said it had immediately contacted the Federal Aviation Administration and was working to better understand what had happened.

A United spokesman told DailyMail.com on Wednesday that the company had nothing new to share on the investigation.

The FAA said in a statement that it is investigating the matter, but offered no new updates beyond what was shared Monday.

After the flight from Zurich landed without incident at O’Hare, maintenance workers discovered an emergency evacuation slide was missing.

United said the Boeing in question was manned by 10 crew members and had 155 passengers on board.

Patrick said the Chicago Police Department ‘were great, they were here right away,’ and that other units joined them soon after. The slide was eventually cleared away at around 3.45pm.

Devitt said his house sustained ‘slight damage,’ but ‘nothing too crazy’ in the freak incident.
