Geelong great Billy Brownless has left his fellow commentators in hysterics after not being able to resist pushing a mystery red button he spotted in the commentary booth at a Melbourne stadium.

Brownless was doing Triple M’s Rush Hour live from Ikon Park for the Charity Shield Game between Richmond and Collingwood on Tuesday when he gave into his urges and set off an emergecy siren around the ground.

The show was running smoothly until the footy cult hero spotted a large red button in the commentary booth.

‘What’s this red thing over there?’ he asked, forcing his co-host Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann tried to intervene by saying, ‘Hang on, Bill. Don’t touch it.’

Fellow commentator Ryan ‘Rabs’ Warren then explained that the button was the ground’s emergency siren.

‘So why would they put it in front of me? A big red button? Why would they do that, Rabs?’ asked Brownless.

Warren then explained that if he touches it, the siren will blast across the ground.

‘I betcha it won’t!’ answered Brownless.

Warren replied: ‘We’re not taking that bet.’

Before anybody could stop him, Brownless reached for the button, pressed it – and the commentary team erupted in laughter as the siren sounded.

‘It actually works!’ roared Brownless. ‘What’s a siren doing up here?’

Brownless then reached for the red button again and sounded the siren for a longer period.

The former Footy Show star is well known for his larrikin streak and sense of humour among fans of the game.

Last year he impersonated an AFL goal umpire at Geelong’s Mad Monday celebrations as stars Tom Hawkins and Cameron Guthrie re-enacted the end to a Sydney vs Adelaide clash that saw Ben Keays denied a goal in controversial circumstances.
