Two teenagers exchanged gunfire outside a Brooklyn public high school on Monday – the second time this month that a gang-related shootout took place near a New York City school.
This is the latest in a string of high-profile incidents of violent crime that have become more common throughout the five boroughs in the last 18 months, during which New York City has seen a rise in the number of shootings, felony assaults, and hate crimes.
Surveillance video obtained exclusively by DailyMail.com shows a teen in a dark-colored jacket and light sweat pants while wearing a hood over his head take out a weapon and fire it at another boy located across the street near Midwood High School in southern Brooklyn.
Footage taken from another surveillance camera nearby shows one of the teens apparently running away from a gunman.

The suspect is a member of the G-Stone Crips armed gang, according to the New York Daily News.
According to Shea, the suspect has been arrested twice in the past eight months for weapons-related offenses.
According to the Daily News, the two teens, both of whom attend Midwood High School, got into an argument.
They then went outside the school and began exchanging gunfire behind the building on East 26th Street and Glenwood Road.
After they exchanged three or four shots, Midwood High School was placed on lockdown.
School safety agents then alerted a nearby NYPD patrol car and identified both shooters.
Police arrested one of the shooters, who was apprehended in an apartment building across the street.
New York City’s Department of Education would not confirm if the two gunmen were indeed students at Midwood.
The high school has a student body of 4,500 kids. There are no metal detectors on the premises.
‘This incident was not school-related and did not happen on school property. The NYPD responded to shots fired and recovered a gun at a private residence,’ the Education Department said in a statement.

Surveillance footage captured the terrifying moment a group of five teenagers unleashed a barrage of bullets during a shootout outside a Bronx elementary school as the young students were about to be dismissed for the day.
The brazen gun violence broke out near the Boys Prep Bronx Elementary School on October 5 at around 2:50 pm as the students at the K-8 school were being sent home.
No students were shot and the gunmen escaped seemingly unharmed in another incident of the city’s out-of-control crime that has seen victims of gun violence nearly double in two years.
The NYPD shared the videos with the public asking for help in locating the unidentified individuals connected to the ‘reckless endangerment incident.’
The video shows two groups of hooded teens shooting at each other at the corner of East 150 Street and Cedar Lane behind the elementary school on a residential street.
A group of three men – one in a gray hoodie and mask and two wearing black – are seen first in a triangle formation looking around as they stand in front of the entrance to a parking lot. The masked gunman then fires down the block at two other men.
The video then cuts to two men at the other side of Cedar Lane, one wearing a gray hoodie and the other in black, hiding between parked cars to avoid getting hit. A man in the gray hoodie standing behind a white SUV then fires back at the trio before shielding himself between a white van driving down the road as he crosses the street.
All three men duck and flee westbound on East 150 Street toward Exterior Street.
A wide shot of the scene shows a group of kids nearly 60 feet away walking from the elementary school towards the violence as it breaks out.
The NYPD video shows a clip of the group of three men casually walking on a sidewalk near the Bronx Terminal Market, a few blocks down from the shootout.
A man getting out of a red minivan directly across the street from the group of two is seen getting into his backseat as the shooting begins and the gunmen run around the street.
The group of two is recorded running through the street between cars towards the other group before circling back to take off eastbound on East 150 Street.
Crime has sky rocketed in New York City, while rates have stayed relatively consistent with last year, they have more than doubled since 2019 in some cases including shooting victims
As of Tuesday, no arrests have been made.
Last week, the NYPD confiscated five guns from area public schools over a 48-hour span.
Police said one weapon was confiscated after a 17-year-old student at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens showed it to another student.
Another gun was found in a 14-year-old student’s backpack at Intermediate School 98 in The Bronx, according to the Daily News.
‘The whole school was in lockdown,’ an IS 98 student told the newspaper.
‘They told us there was a gun in the school. It lasted two periods. We couldn’t leave the class.
‘They had us go to one side of the room.’
Last week, the NYPD also recovered three handguns from schools in Brooklyn and The Bronx.
The recent shootouts and gun seizures is already fueling calls for Mayor Bill de Blasio to staff more safety agents at city public schools.
NYPD Chief of Department Rodney Harrison said on Monday that the safety agent force has decreased citywide by 37 percent.
Harrison, who spoke at de Blasio’s City Hall news briefing on Monday, said that there are currently 3,200 safety agents at public schools across the five boroughs – a drop from a high of 5,000.
But the Department of Education clarified Harrison’s comments, saying that there were roughly 4,100 safety agents, according to the New York Post.
In the wake of the May 2020 police-involved death of George Floyd, de Blasio pledged to transfer the supervision of school safety agents from the NYPD to the Department of Education.
The transition is scheduled to be completed by next year.
Some have advocated removing school safety agents altogether and replacing them with counselors and social workers.
But others say that the presence of safety agents is necessary to prevent violence.
‘In all these violent incidents, School Safety Agents professionally responded to minimize the mayhem and save lives,’ said Greg Floyd, the president of Teamsters Local 237, which represents school safety agents.
‘What more will it take … to acknowledge that to help ensure safety in public schools, School Safety Agents are needed there?’
A group calling itself NYC School Safety Coalition held a rally in The Bronx on Friday demanding more metal detectors and police officers inside schools.
