Canadian bicycle-mounted police officers chased down and caught an ‘armed and dangerous drug smuggler’ who is on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) list of its top 10 most wanted criminals during a routine patrol.

Montreal police say 35-year-old Katay-Khaophone Sychanta, who had a $25,000 (£19,000) reward on his head, tried to flee on foot along a bike path, but officers caught him for alleged drug possession.

His identity was discovered back at a police station where officers noticed a distinctive amputated right middle fingertip.

An ICE wanted page for Sychanta says: ‘He has a history of violence and has allegedly made threats against HSI Special Agents and other law enforcement officials.

‘Khaophone Sychantha is known to have associates and could be hiding in the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Asia.

‘He should be considered armed and dangerous.’

He was arraigned Thursday on charges of drug possession, obstructing the work of police and false documents.

He should be considered armed and dangerous

Sychanta faces earlier drug charges in Ontario as well as those in the United States.

Sychanta was born in Laos and was first indicted in 2005 in Michigan.

The ICE most-wanted list says he evaded capture on drug charges in the U.S. and continued to supervise a drug-smuggling organization based near Windsor, Ontario.
