More than 35,000 Elvis impersonators descend on Porthcawl to pay homage to the King

More than 35,000 Elvis super-fans donned their Blue Suede Shoes and flocked to a Welsh seaside town in celebration of the King. 

Performers and fans from all over the world all met in Porthcawl, a town on the south coast of Wales, 25 miles west of Cardiff.    

Feature events take place over a specific weekend each year, in the magnificent Grand Pavilion which hosted the Best Festival Elvis competition.

In addition, The Hi Tide host over 100 shows during the weekend, many with free admission.

Over twenty venues in and around the Town form the Fringe Festival, a unique celebration of the American crooner.   

Garry Foley has been an Elvis impersonator for 15 years and performed in Porthcawl on Saturday, his 11th year of service at the festival.

‘It’s a great job,’ he told the BBC. He has just returned from Canada and tours India every January. 

In 2015 he toured China for three months, entertaining the crowds with hits such as ‘Suspicious Minds’. 

‘It really is all age groups. It’s great to see the legacy Elvis has left behind is still appealing to youngsters today,’ said Foley, from Poole in Dorset.

He added that his make up usually takes longer than his wife’s does. 

The festival is a welcome, if not bemusing, attraction for the city. It also acts as a huge cash boost for local industries. 

‘It’s a big boost to the local economy,’ said festival organiser Peter Philips, with fans spending money on things like accommodation, food, drink, taxis.
