More than 50 firefighters battle blaze at Holiday Inn hotel as smoke billows across M6 causing long tailbacks

Dozens of firefighters are battling a huge blaze at a Holiday Inn as plumes of black smoke engulf the nearby motorway causing long tailbacks.

A video shows flames destroying the two-storey building in Walsall, in the West Midlands, as more than 50 firefighters rushed to the scene. 

Footage shows huge plumes of smoke billowing from the charred building, as motorists are held up in long traffic jams near the M6.

Emergency services were called to tackle the blaze at around 4pm, which is now being described as ‘severe’. 

In the shocking video, the roof appears to have collapsed while the rest of the building has been gutted by the flames.

Local residents have been told to keep their windows and doors shut to avoid the smoke.

No one has been injured during the blaze, and guests have been taken to a nearby hotel. 

It is believed the blaze started in the sauna before spreading throughout the building, according to the Express and Star.

Meanwhile, motorists are being held up during rush hour as the blaze is tackled.

The West Midland Fire Service tweeted: ‘More than 50 firefighters are tackling a fire at a hotel near Junction 10 of the #M6 near Walsall.

‘Our first crews were on the scene in under 5 minutes and we now have ten fire engines and two aerial platforms there.

It later added: ‘Crews working hard to bring fire under control at Holiday Inn off Junction 10 Walsall. Please keep all windows and doors shut due to smoke in the area, as a precaution only.’

Fire crew now have ten fire engines and two aerial platforms at the scene.
