Mother branded an Asian taxi driver a ‘terrorist’

Cassandra Toland, 23, from Allenton in Derbyshire, attacked the man in his own car

A mother branded an Asian taxi driver a ‘terrorist’ in a foul-mouthed racist rant that saw her claim ‘his type was responsible’ for the Manchester bombing.

Cassandra Toland, 23, from Allenton in Derbyshire, attacked the man in his own car.

When she was arrested by the police, she called a female officer ‘a dirty tramp’ and told her the taxi driver ‘is a terrorist and should not even be in this country’.

Sentencing Toland to 12 week in jail, suspended for 12 months, at Derby Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Jonathan Taaffesaid: ‘This was an appalling display of bigotry, arrogance and aggression towards a taxi driver simply trying to earn a living and pay his taxes.

‘He is a decent citizen who is no more responsible for events which happened on Manchester and London than you or I.

‘The language you used is dangerous and does nothing to assist in harmonious relations.’

Peter Bettany said the offending took place at around 3.30pm on June 16 in Norfolk when Toland had gone to a concert with her cousin.

He said they ordered the taxi which picked them up and as they set off Toland, who was sat in the back, started arguing with the cabbie who was trying to get her to put on her seat belt.

The driver was asked to stop at a cashpoint in a Tesco car park and while her cousin went to withdraw money Toland started racially abusing the driver and then hit him once to the back of the head.

Mr Bettany said: ‘He asked her to get out of the car saying he would not take them any further and she reacted by swearing at the taxi driver calling him “a foreigner” and “a terrorist” and saying “you have to take me, I am paying you”.

‘He said to her “I don’t have to take you now get out” and he called 999.

‘When the police arrived he told them “I can handle the swearing but not the other things she is saying to me”.’

Mr Bettany said Toland was spoken to by the police and said to them ‘he’s (the cabbie) a terrorist and should not even be in this country’.

He said Toland, a mother-of one, was arrested and called the female officer ‘a dirty tramp’ and said to her ‘You wait until I get out of these handcuffs’.

She was later charged with racially-aggravated assault which she pleaded guilty

Judge Taaffe asked Toland, who defended herself in court: ‘Is there anything you want to say to me about this disgraceful incident?’

Crying in the dock she replied: ‘I am really sorry, I was with my cousin, we had been to a concert, I’d had a lot of alcohol.’
