A mother has claimed she was lunchbox shamed by her four-year-old son’s school for putting pickles in his lunchbox because they ‘don’t count’ as vegetables.

Alicia Liebel Berg, from Minnesota, took to Twitter to reveal she was handed a note from her child’s school informing her that her child’s required portion of vegetables was ‘missing’ from his lunch that day.

The checklist, which is based on information from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), states  that each child’s lunch must include ‘two veggies’ or ‘veggies and fruit’.

Taking to social media, Alicia claimed the school didn’t have a problem with accepting ‘cut up cucumbers’ as a vegetable in her four-year-old’s lunch on another day.

Alicia Liebel Berg, from Minnesota, said she was handed a note from her child’s school informing her that ‘pickles don’t count’ as the ‘vegetable’ required to be a part of his lunch

She said: ‘Today’s All-American Lunch Box Saga has a major debate. That requires a poll of the masses.

‘Is a pickle a vegetable? Does it “count”? Guess what. His cut up cucumbers do.’

According to the checklist, parents are required to provide a daily quota of milk, protein, grains or bread and fruit in their child’s lunch, alongside vegetables.

The note states: ‘Please note, a lunch must include 1/4 cups each of two different veggies or a 1/4 cup each fruit and veggies’.

Alicia, a mother-of-two, later tweeted the USDA insisting that the ‘American farmer’ would ‘vehemently disagree’ that pickles aren’t classed a vegetable.

This wasn’t the first time Alicia had been called out for an apparent lack of vegetables in her son’s packed lunch.

On January 11, she posted another image of a lunch checklist which had ‘vegetable’ circled because it was ‘missing’ from her child’s meal.

Alongside the photograph, she said: ‘This is what our lives as parents have become. Hard. Too damn hard.

‘Making sure the prescriptive boxes are checked for some government oversight committee. I work hard and put love in his daily sack lunch.

‘And yes. I am annoyed. He’s only in pre-K!!!!!’

Other social media users took to the comments of Alicia’s post to sympathize with her dilemma.

One user said: ‘You know whoever wrote that eats cold hot dogs dipped in cheese whiz for lunch.’

Another added: ‘That’s overstepping for sure. I would start choosing one thing to leave out every day to cause more unnecessary work for them.’

‘OMG! That is crazy,’ said a third.
