Mother left ‘horrified’ after ASDA gives WINE as an alternative to out-of-stock baby formula
A furious mother has been left ‘horrified’ after a supermarket suggested wine as an alternative to out-of-stock baby formula.
Lucy Anders, 33, was shopping for her 18-month-old on ASDA’s website when she noticed her usual brand was out of stock, and decided to take a look at the alternatives.
Ms Anders, from Preston, told FEMAIL that as her child was born prematurely it is important that she sticks to her usual brand – and the suggestions weren’t up to scratch.
Rather than a slightly different child-safe product, the mother was recommended a bottle of Barefoot wine. When tested by MailOnline, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinot Grigio appeared under recommendations for the Aptamil brand.

The incident left Ms Anders ‘horrified’, and questioning who the alternative was catering for: ‘Me or the baby?’
She said: ‘My baby was born prematurely and so it was important for us to stick with our usual baby formula. Since it was out of stock, I wondered what alternatives there were and that’s how I discovered the unusual suggestion.
‘I was horrified when Asda suggested wine as an alternative to the baby milk, and couldn’t understand where this had come from. I was also unsure as to who they were giving this suggestion to?’

She was forced to go elsewhere to find the product she needed for her child – formula by the brand Aptamil
The mother said she will now ‘think twice’ about shopping at Asda, adding: ‘I’m not sure they quite understand their consumers.’

‘On this occasion, I definitely shopped elsewhere.’
When tested by MailOnline, our reporters also found suggestions of wine as an alternative to Aptamil products. However, the formula is in stock in some areas.
Asda has been contacted for comment.
