Mother left with horror gash after being mauled by dog in Oldham

A mother sustained horrific injuries and is facing plastic surgery after being savaged by a vicious dog while intervening in a street row.

The Bullmastiff-type dog mauled Chelsea Royal so badly it left her with exposed bone and nerve damage in her leg.

Police are investigating the incident, which happened on Henshaw Street, Oldham at around 9.30pm last Friday (July 13).

Ms Royal, 30, said she fears the dog could attack someone else and urged the public to help.

Ms Royal, a mother of three, was savaged by the dog for three or four minutes after intervening in an argument between two men. Pictured left and right are her wounds

She said: ‘My main concern is that the dog is still out on the streets. Next time it could be a child. This was just out on the street and it was on a lead.

‘It could have been anyone. It’s not like I was trying to provoke its owner. The thought of it getting a child after what it has done to my leg is horrible.’

Mother-of-three Ms Royal was walking to her local shop when she noticed an argument unfolding outside.

She said: ‘It was kicking off with two lads outside. One of them was the dog’s owner.

‘I knew their names and was trying to calm the situation down and told them to go home.

‘Next thing I knew the dog had hold of my leg. It wasn’t barking, it just came out of nowhere.

‘I was just screaming because it had locked its jaw and would not let go. It felt like forever, but I think it lasted about three or four minutes.

Ms Royal said she is now facing plastic surgery to fix the wound and fears the dog could go on to attack again

‘I can’t remember properly because I was in shock. My sister was kicking it and my cousin was trying to drag it off.

‘The owner didn’t do anything. When it did eventually let go he ran off and took the dog home.’

Ms Royal has undergone two ‘deep cleans’ and has been given antibiotics.

She cannot walk on the injured leg and has been told she may need plastic surgery and a skin graft.

‘One of the wounds is right down to my shin bone,’ she added.

‘I can’t feel my foot because I’ve got nerve damage. The doctors don’t know how long that will last.’

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said officers are investigating the attack.
