  • She has made $53,000 since listing the six-person motor home in January 2018

A single mother-of-two has earned $53,000 in just over a year and been able to quit her job as an optician just by hiring out her family camper van.

After returning from a 26,000km ‘Lap of Australia’ she undertook in the motor home with her two young children in 2017, Faith Davey, 42, decided to make her passion her living.

The Melbourne mum spent $70,000 on the six-person camper van, and has recouped most of that investment in less than two years after receiving 43 bookings.

Faith listed the home on rental website Camplify in January 2018 after returning from her 10-month trip around the country with daughter Matilda, 9, and son Charlie, 6.

Within a day she had four bookings, and built on that by partnering with a local brewery and advertising through a car wash.

‘Since January 2018 we have had 43 hires,’ she told FEMAIL, while adding that she boosts her income by helping others emulate her success.

‘I help them set up their listings and often send them a manual with a checklist of things they need to do.’

To safeguard her new business, Faith took out insurance on the van and installed a GPS to make sure she always knows where it is.

‘We had one case where someone didn’t return when they said they would – they were meant to be back in the morning and I didn’t get a message until 4pm in the afternoon,’ she said.

She has also boosted her bank balance by selling her home and moving into an apartment in Highett in Melbourne’s south-east.

Faith’s career change began when she separated from her husband and lost her close friend Trev to cancer.

It was then that she embarked on the continent-wide journey over nine months with her two kids, and said it motivated her to share her amazing experience with others.

‘The thought of resuming life as it was horrified me, so I decided to keep the dream alive and do things differently,’ she wrote on her blog on the rental website.

‘Hiring out my motor-home makes me happy to think I share the joy with other families, couples or small groups and it allows me to have more time with my kids.’

Faith’s Renegade camper van can be rented from $155-per-night on Camplify.
