Mother of woman who killed grandfather speaks out

The heartbroken mother of a woman who killed her own grandfather has spoken out about the horrific murder for the first time.

Gold Coast woman Brittney Jade Dwyer, 20, stabbed her grandfather Robert Whitwell, 81, in the neck and chest in his Adelaide home in August 2016 before calmly washing the dishes.

Through tears, Dwyer’s mother Tonya has spoken out for the first time to Sunday Night about the moment her family was ripped apart.

‘What are the signs that I missed?’ she said.

‘The anger that’s inside [her] … never did I think that she was dark.’

The murder was part of a plan to steal Mr Whitwell’s life savings, and was inspired by the television show American Horror Story.

‘It was my dad, and my daughter killed him,’ Ms Dwyer said.

Brittney Dwyer cried alongside family members after killing her grandfather, supposedly mourning her ‘poor poppa’.

Dwyer and her friend Bernadette Burns, 22, travelled from Queensland to South Australia to steal Mr Whitwell’s life savings.

Dwyer entered her grandfather’s house in Craigmore wearing gloves and carrying a knife about 11am on August 5, 2016.

Mr Whitwell showed his granddaughter family photos of her as a child before she stabbed him to death.

The case summary stated Dwyer then washed dishes while her grandfather died.

Dwyer and Burns stole $1000 from Mr Whitwell’s wallet and two digital cameras.

They were unable to find more than $110,000 he had hidden in his shed.

Both women pleaded guilty to murder, and will be sentenced on November 7.

Dwyer’s friend Shelby Lee Angie Holmes pleaded guilty to home invasion after she allegedly attempted to steal $30,000 from Mr Whitwell.
