Mother reunited with son after garbage truck kills woman

A woman has broken down after being reunited with her unharmed toddler while being told her mother was killed by a garbage truck.

Camera crews captured the moment relief swept over the woman as police officers brought her son towards her alive and well on Thursday.

But the relief swiftly turned to heartache, as she learnt her 58-year-old mother was killed by the reversing truck about 11.45am in Dee Why, on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Her 18-month-old son’s life was reportedly saved by his grandmother, who pushed him inside a pram to safety, according to The Australian.

Catherine Hasler witnessed the tearful reunion, telling 7 News: ‘It looked like they’d just been called from work, the father and the mother.

‘It’s terrible, it’s the last thing you’d expect to happen and get that phone call.’

The 58-year-old died at the scene after suffering critical injuries to her lower body.

Witnesses told local newspaper The Manly Daily the United Resource Management truck had been reversing into a cul-de-sac.

United Resource Management released a statement describing the driver of the truck as a ‘loving father himself’ who has been left ‘extremely distressed’.

He was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests, which returned negative results.

The company added that the vehicle appeared to have all safety features working, and that neither speed nor mechanical failures were factors in the incident.

A crime scene was established and police are investigating.
