MotoGP rider Marc Marquez confirms double vision has returned following shocking crash

Marc Marquez is suffering from another episode of double vision following his horrific 115mph crash during the warm-up session ahead of Sunday’s Indonesian Grand Prix.

The six-time MotoGP champion suffered a violent high-side going into Turn 7 that launched him into the air and he landed heavily on his side.

Marquez also took a whack to the and it has been confirmed he has damaged a nerve in his eye, but he avoided serious injury as the cartwheeling bike missed him.

The Spaniard did not race after he was declared medically unfit after suffering a concussion.

The 29-year-old suffered a similar episode which caused him to miss two races at the end of last season, following a concussion he suffered during a practice crash which led to doctors advising him to stop racing.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Marquez has now said: ‘It seems that I am experiencing deja vu.

‘During the trip back to Spain, I began to have discomfort with my vision and we decided to visit Dr. Sanchez Dalmau, who confirmed that I have a new episode of diplopia.

‘Fortunately, it is less severe than the injury I had at the end of last year. But now it’s time to rest and wait to see how the injury evolves.’

Honda said Marquez underwent a check-up in Madrid to evaluate all the bruises caused by the crash as well as a brain MRI, which confirmed he had not suffered any other injuries.

A statement from Dr Dalmau said: ‘The neuro-ophthalmological evaluation carried out on Marc Marquez on Monday after the head injury that occurred at the Indonesian Grand Prix, shows a new episode of diplopia caused by a recurrence of paralysis of the fourth right nerve, with less involvement than the one that occurred in the injury in November 2021.

‘After this examination, it was initially decided to follow a conservative treatment with periodic medical tests.

‘Next week, Marc Márquez will undergo a new check-up to evaluate the evolution of the injury and to predict the estimated recovery period to return to competition.’

The crash happened towards the end of the 20-minute warm-up session at the Mandalika International Street Circuit on Sunday morning.

Both the rider and bike were sent flying through the air, with the Spaniard somersaulting over his machine before landing heavily on his arm.

Marquez was thrown up to 15 feet in the air when he somersaulted before crashing onto the track.

It was a bruising weekend for Marquez who suffered three prior crashes to the one on Sunday that ruled him out of the race

The force of the crash sent him sliding and rolling across the track before eventually coming to a stop.

BT Sport commentator Gavin Emmett said on commentary after replays were shown: ‘That’s a shocking crash for Marc Marquez. That’s one of the biggest high-sides I’ve seen in 25 years covering this sport.

‘He must have been 12 to 15 feet in the air the Repsol Honda man.’

His bike was destroyed and his mechanics had their hands covering their mouths as they gasped in shock at the violence of the crash.

Miraculously, he was able to get to his feet, albeit gingerly, and he stumbled away looking unsettled and dazed.

He was eventually met by medical personnel who drove him back to the paddock before he was taken to hospital.

Marquez had endured a bruising weekend in Indonesia, suffering two front-end crashes during qualifying as he tried to get out of the Q1 session.

Due to the extreme temperatures at Mandalika, Michelin has brought a stiffer tyre casing last used in 2018 to try to cope with the conditions after it encountered problems in the pre-season test in Indonesia on its 2022 tyre design.

However, the stiffer casing has caused major rear grip issues for a number of riders.

The lack of rear grip for the Honda was evident throughout the Indonesia weekend as Marquez suffered numerous rear-end moments through the sessions – including in warm-up before his massive crash.

Marquez, who won six titles in MotoGP’s senior category between 2013 to 2019, suffered a season-ending crash in the first race of the 2020 season when he broke his arm. He also missed four races in 2021 to fully recover from the arm injury and the concussion.
