Mount Marlow, Whitsundays crash: Five people left fighting for life and four injured in horror smash

Five people are fighting for life and four people have been injured following a horror two-vehicle crash near a popular holiday destination.   

The smash occurred at Shute Harbour Road, in Mount Marlow, south-west of Airlie Beach, in north Queensland, at 1.08pm on Sunday. 

Six people were rushed to Proserpine Hospital after emergency services, including police and firefighters, attended the scene. 

A spokesman from the Queensland Ambulance Service told Daily Mail Australia two people suffered life threatening injuries. 

The spokesman said two others were also assessed at the scene for critical injuries while four passengers were transported to hospital in a stable condition.

Another person was airlifted to Mackay Hospital in a serious condition, with a total of nine people injured following the crash. 

Shute Harbour Road, which connects Proserpine and Airlie Beach, has been closed in both directions and it is expected to be shut for some time. 

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and diversions and traffic signage are in place to redirect drivers to alternative routes. 

Police are at the scene and are conducting investigations.

A spokesman from Queensland Police declined to comment when contacted by Daily Mail. 

Queensland Health has been contacted for comment.
