Mount Pritchard police investigation after dead body is found in south-west Sydney

A man allegedly involved in a suspected fatal hit-and-run has been arrested 10 metres from where the victim was found lying in the middle of a suburban street in Sydney’s south-west.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Pritchard Street and Hemphill Avenue in Mount Pritchard around 3am on Wednesday after a bystander found a man lying in the middle of the road suffering significant injuries.

The young man, believed to be of Indian or sub-continental appearance aged 25-30 was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the desperate efforts of paramedics to save him.

Police declared a crime scene and has since obtained CCTV of a man walking down the street before he was allegedly struck by a black Lexus.

Police attended a Pritchard Street address around 9.30am where they arrested a man.

The man was escorted by officers into a paddy wagon and taken to Fairfield Police Station for further questioning.

Officers remained at the home afterwards, where they were seen inspecting a black Lexus and placing evidence into plastic bags.

Police and forensic officers remain at the blocked off intersection, which was declared a crime scene.

Detectives went door-to-door to interview residents who may have seen or heard anything as they obtained potential CCTV.

It’s unclear how long the man’s body was lying in the middle of the road for. He has yet to be formally identified.

It’s understood that the victim and the driver were not known to each other.

Police urge witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.

‘We’re appealing to the public to come forward with CCTV footage, we’ll spend the rest of the morning canvassing the surrounding streets looking for footage,’ Inspector Benjamin McIntyre told reporters.
