Jose Mourinho has insisted it would be a mistake for Manchester United to let goalkeeper David de Gea join Real Madrid this summer.

Spain’s No 1 is on a shortlist at the Bernabeu that also includes Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois but Mourinho wants the 27-year-old to remain at Old Trafford and attempt to win his second Premier League title.

‘Do you think a club that is trying to attract the best players is the club that is open to sell the best players? It makes no sense,’ said Mourinho.

‘If you want to go to that level you have top attract the best players like we did with Alexis, Matic and Pogba and so on. And don’t let our best players go.’

De Gea has developed into one of the world’s top goalkeepers after initially struggling at United following an £18.9million move from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

A £30million move to Real Madrid unexpectedly broke down in 2015 when the necessary paperwork wasn’t filed in time and he made his 300th appearance for United against Huddersfield last weekend.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper has kept 90 clean sheets in 226 Premier League appearances for United.
