Mum heartbroken after custom cake for her son’s birthday was ‘completely ruined’ by the baker

Mum furious after custom Spiderman cake for her toddler’s birthday arrives looking very different than expected: ‘It’s ugly and laughable’

  • A mum was furious after a baker delivered a botched cake for her son’s birthday
  • Isabel, from South Africa, wanted a simple Spiderman cake with edible toppers
  • But she received a ‘laughable mess’ with creased fondant and misshapen décor
  • She posted the cake ‘fail’ to Facebook attracting hundreds of amused comments

A mum was ‘heartbroken’ when the custom cake she ordered for her son’s birthday was partially inedible and botched beyond repair.

Isabel, from South Africa, asked the baker for a red and blue Spiderman cake with edible cake toppers and frosting – but the order she received looked nothing like the reference image she provided.

‘My son could not stop talking about me getting him a Spiderman cake for his 3rd birthday last week – to my shock is the cake I ordered vs the cake I received,’ she wrote in a Facebook post.

The mum found a photo of a cake online that was exactly what she pictured for her son’s birthday.

She sent the photo to an independent baker who assured her that she would be able to deliver an exact replica.

But that was far from the truth.

The cake Isabel received was carelessly decorated and had folds of creased fondant all over the single tier.

There were also significant tears and holes in the fondant and some of the sugar star decorations were visibly tainted and broken.

‘I did not want anything complicated but she still couldn’t deliver,’ she said.

Isabel also revealed that the baker was extremely professional and she had previously ordered two cakes from the same business.

‘I don’t know what happened – I’ve ordered twice from her in the past but this is the first time she has used fondant.’

The mum was especially miffed because the main feature of the cake was inedible.

‘The Spiderman was not even edible!’ she exclaimed. ‘I only noticed after my son had already bitten into it.’

Isabel demanded a full refund from the baker – but her request has not been processed yet.

Another professional was extremely upset to see a simple cake executed so poorly.

‘I don’t get why they’ve covered it in fondant when the cake you gave them for reference is clearly a buttercream cake?’ she wrote.

‘The printed image is so dark and zero need for it to be fondant backed either. The fondant looks like elephant skin because it dried out too much before they’ve put it on the cake.’

‘And it looks like there’s no buttercream underneath it – which you can see through the tear near the top, and the toppers are nothing like what was asked for. They have no business selling cakes to anyone!’

Hundreds of other mums were furious at the ‘laughable’ outcome.

‘I’d throw such a fit if I didn’t immediately get a full refund after being sent this mess.’

‘This is so unacceptable – it looks more like play dough than icing.’
