Mum of Princess Charlotte lookalike reveals strangers stop her in the street to comment on likeness

The mum of a five-year-old who is the spitting image of Princess Charlotte claims she’s regularly stopped in the street by strangers convinced her daughter is the fourth-in-line to the throne.

Gemma Culverwell, from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was first told her little girl, Marcy, bore more than a passing resemblance to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridges’ daughter when shopping at Primark last year.

Since then Gemma, 35, regularly spots open-mouthed people doing double-takes at Marcy in the street.

When the pair are out and about they are regularly stopped – even at the airport on holiday – by people remarking on her likeness.

Gemma said: ‘Marcy looks more like Princess Charlotte than the official lookalike does.

‘People stop us as we’re walking past and say, “Oh, she looks so much like Princess Charlotte” or admit they’ve had to do a double take.

‘The first time it happened we were in Primark in Meadowhall and the woman serving us said, “Oh God your daughter looks like Princess Charlotte”.

‘I don’t know why anyone would think she would be in Meadowhall in Sheffield without her mum – I’m not Princess Kate!

‘It never clicked until she said it, it was only when I looked at pictures of her that I realised she does.

‘The checkout girl at Birmingham Airport last year when we went on holiday to Turkey was checking her passport and did a double take too.

‘It’s very flattering, Princess Charlotte is such a lovely little girl – always good fun and always looks beautiful, it’s a very nice comparison.’

Mum-of-one Gemma said even usually sceptical metal fabricator husband Dylan Culverwell, 39, agreed they looked very alike.

Gemma said: ‘My husband likes to be sceptical and even he agrees, so if he agrees then you know it’s true.’

Marcy, who is 10 months older than her royal lookalike, despises wearing trousers and instead prefers donning dresses and skirts similar in style to the ones Princess Charlotte wears.

Gemma said: ‘Marcy gets very upset if you put her in trousers. She likes wearing skirts and dresses because she says she doesn’t want to look like a boy.

‘If we got to the soft play I’ll say she can’t wear a skirt because she would burn her bum on the slide or flash [people] and that she needs to have trousers on but it isn’t worth the hassle.

‘At that point I just say “put what you want on”. She has a wide variety of clothing. I like things off eBay or Primark and then higher end designer items – I like to do a mixture for her.

‘One of her nanas goes to America a lot so she brings her loads of clothes back from there.

‘I wouldn’t go to the extreme of dressing her like Princess Charlotte but it’s nice when people comment.’

Gemma said that more and more people have started commented on the similarity between her in the last year – both online and in person.

And although not signed up with an agency Gemma said she’s open to little Marcy doing lookalike work.

Gemma said: ‘People have commented on photos I’ve shared on social media saying how much she looks like her.

‘Marcy didn’t look like her when she was a baby but has started to now that she’s older.

‘I put up a picture of Marcy next to a picture of Princess Charlotte and those who already thought it agreed.

‘Other people commented saying they didn’t realised how similar they were until I put them together.

‘I even had a woman message me and say, “I nearly stopped you in the school yard the other day to tell you how much she looks like Princess Charlotte”.

‘She’s not signed with anyone but we are open to the possibility of doing lookalike work in the future.’

Not only does Marcy look like Prince George’s little sister, Gemma said she also has a matching ‘feisty’ personality that she puts to good effect on stage during pageant competitions.

Gemma said: ‘She can be quite shy when you first meet her and then she never stops talking.

‘She loves having her picture taken – singing and dancing and doing little shows. The pageants she’s been doing for the last year have brought her on loads with her confidence and it’s lovely watching her on stage performing.

‘Marcy has quite a feisty edge to her but Princess Charlotte has too – they’re like your modern-day princesses.

‘I’ve showed Marcy pictures of her and said, “this is who people think you look like”. She thinks she’s nice but doesn’t have that awareness yet of looking like somebody else.

‘Marcy is always full of fun and adventure and always wanting to know everything that’s going on.

‘When you think you can have secret conversations in code, she’s already picked the code before you’ve decided what it is.

‘Kids are hard work but the joy she brings you could never replace it. She’s full of life, full of character and is our little princess.’
