An Aussie mother-of-two has left hundreds online puzzled after sharing an image of an ‘odd’ find inside her bathroom.

Mina Alcantara, from the Gold Coast, sought help from others on Facebook as she desperately wanted to know what the bizarre ceramic platform was sticking out of the shower wall.

‘We moved in recently and I can’t work out what this is in the shower. Both showers have it, there’s a proper big niche for shampoo etc. – any idea?!’ she wrote.

‘It slopes down it doesn’t really hold a soap bar.’

Close to 400 people ‘liked’ the post and many took a guess at what the peculiar object could be.

‘Looks like a soap holder that’s been put the wrong way,’ one person wrote.

Another asked: ‘Was this soap holder put in upside down??’

‘My husband asked me if the people before us (in their 70s) used it as a way to hold up a leg during shower nookie, and now I can’t get the image out of my head,’ a third said.

Finally, many offered an explanation and said the weird shower ‘shelf’ is actually a foot stool used to make it easier to shave your legs.

This type of design was particularly popular in 1990s.

‘It’s definitely a foot rest,’ one person wrote.

Another said: ‘I’d be way too scared to put my leg on that to shave I’d probably bring the tile down.’

Others seemed disappointed their showers aren’t built with the unique object.

‘I’ve wanted one my whole life,’ one woman said.

And some warned Mina about the ‘dangers’ of using the footrest.

‘Just don’t put too much weight on it! They come off the wall if older!!!’ one person said.

‘Mine’s just installed for me to bang my shins on and cover me in bruises,’ another added.

Mina told Yahoo News two others urged her to remove or avoid it after they landed in hospital as a result from using the footrest.
