Muriel’s Wedding star doesn’t look like this anymore! Actor’s new role 30 years after starring in iconic comedy

Matt Day is recognised by many for his role in the iconic romantic comedy Muriel’s Wedding. 

The Australian actor starred as Brice Nobes in the 1994 film – a young man who the lead character, Muriel, played by Toni Collette, goes on an ill-fated date with. 

Now 52, Matt says looking back at the film, which premiered 30 years ago when he was just 23, makes him feel ‘very old’. 

‘I can’t believe it’s been 30 years. It opened doors for everyone who was involved in that film. It’s kind of remarkable’ he tells the Herald Sun. 

Matt’s latest role is in the Foxtel series Strife alongside Asher Keddie and Jonathan LaPaglia.

‘It’s always great fun playing a scene with her because she’s always really sharp,’ he says of Asher, whose soon to be ex-husband he plays in the show. 

‘She’s very smart and she’s always trying to get the best out of the scene and best out of the actor she’s working with.’

Following his time in Muriel’s Wedding, Matt went on to score dozens of roles, including in Underbelly, Paper Giants, Wolf Creek, Rake and Love Child.  

Muriel’s Wedding was an international smash success that made household names of several of its stars. 

Colette in particular became a Hollywood star following the success of the comedy around the world.

She recently admitted that she actively rejected films similar to her breakout hit, when she moved to Los Angeles because she did not want to be ‘comfortable’. 

The actress went on to star in the Oscar-nominated films the Sixth Sense in 1999, for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The ’90s classic follows Muriel, played by Collette, who spends her days dreaming of the perfect wedding day – despite never having been on a date.

Directed by P. J. Hogan, the movie has since been adapted for the stage in Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical.
