Irish police have launched an investigation after footage of a Muslim teenager having her hijab pulled off while being forced to the ground and kicked was posted online.

Shocking footage shows a gang of young women and men descend on the girl, 14,  in Dundrum, south Dublin. 

The group allegedly pelted an egg at her and a friend, before kicking her on the ground.

‘Don’t touch her’ and ‘she’s only a child’ can be heard being shouted in the clip, while smashed eggs are seen on the ground. 

Local Fine Gael Councillor Jim O’Leary urged anyone with information to contact the police, as he blasted the attack.

He told Dublin Live: ‘It’s dreadful. Whatever your views about any issue this is assault, and it’s assault on a minor just going about her business.

‘I urge anyone with information to come forward. We need to nip this in the bud right now.’

Culture and heritage minister Jospha Madigan said she hops to see justice ‘quickly’. 

‘I condemn in the strongest possible terms the assault on a Muslim girl who had her hijab taken from her in Dundrum village yesterday. 

‘I hope the perpetrators are brought to justice quick’ she added.

In the original footage posted online, text attached to the video read:  ‘My sister and my cousin were attacked yesterday evening in Dundrum village.

‘I can’t believe this! I am so disgusted and angry that I was not there to protect them. 

‘Please help share this to find these sc*mbags to prosecute them and bring them to justice.

‘They remove [sic] my cousins hijab and kick her while she is down then attack my sister and bring her to the ground to kick her! This should not be happening to anyone nomatter [sic] who they are! What world do we live in!!!’

A spokesperson said: ‘Gardaí are investigating an alleged minor assault of a female in her teens, which occurred on Sunday 18th August 2019 at approximately 15:30 on Main Street, Dundrum. 

‘No arrests have been made and investigation is ongoing.’
