My husband stayed at a drunk female colleague’s house after the work Christmas party because she was too sick to leave on her own – I’m worried, but people say he did the right thing

A woman has revealed her marital dilemma after finding out her husband stayed at a female colleague’s house after a Christmas party.

Taking to British parenting platform Mumsnet, she explained her partner claimed the woman was too sick to leave alone at the end of the night.

The husband claimed his colleague was ‘spewing and falling over as she made her way into a taxi’, so he decided to go with her to see if she was ok.

The concerned wife asked other women on the forum what their husbands would do in that situation.

In response, other people on the forum were divided – however many people think the woman’s husband did the right thing.

The post read: ‘My [husband] was on his Xmas night out tonight. Started quite early and he said he’d be home about 11pm – did and does not matter to me at all that he decided to extend it to a big night.

‘I text at 1.50am to check all was okay, and he asked me to call him asap.

‘As I understand it, one of the women got so incredibly drunk that she was very ill and unsafe. Spewing and falling over as she made her way into a taxi. My husband has gone home with her to check she was okay.

‘She’s now passed out on her floor, having been sick everywhere. He says he’s covered in her sick. He doesn’t want to leave her because she lives alone and he’s not sure that she’s safe.

‘He thinks he should stay until morning, or until she wakes up at least. What would your husband do in that situation?’

Although the wife appeared concerned by her husband’s message, many people responding to her thought her husband had done the right thing, in case his colleague’s condition worsened.

One person said: ‘Thank goodness he’s there. Go help him if you can.’

Another said: ‘Poor girl and what an awful end to the night out for both her and your husband. Your husband is an absolute star and a thoroughly decent bloke.

‘Fair play to him and to you going over to check she is ok.’

Someone else commented: ‘I’m sure I’m going against the grain, but your husband sounds like a good guy. I’d maybe put her on the couch, cover in a blanket and leave.

‘I don’t think an adult will die if left alone drunk. Perhaps he could call another colleague but it sounds a bit late for that.’

While another said: ‘You’ve got a good one there. I think my husband would do the same or I’d like to think anyway! Hope you both catch up on some sleep today. Would love to know about the aftermath!’

However others said he should have called a female friend of his colleague – or an ambulance – if she was very unwell.

One person said: ‘I think he’d be incredibly stupid and naive to stay with her alone overnight. Does he have anyone else’s number he can call to stay over as well?’

Another person said: ‘Ring an ambulance. He can’t be expected to stay with her ‘just in case’

‘She’s a grown adult who chose to drink until she was so drunk she was out of control.’

Someone else wrote: ‘I would ring an ambulance and get her seen to as not good if she cannot be woken and is so drunk and out of it.’

Many suggested he did the right thing to stay and make sure the woman didn't 'choke on her own vomit'

Others were concerned about how the sick woman would feel in the morning with a man in her house.

One person said: ‘If she is blackout drunk and wakes up with a man in her house, this could be a worry for all concerned.’

Another agreed saying: ‘Is he medically trained? So odd that when she lost consciousness his first thought wasn’t to get medical help.

‘It’s not just a vomiting person. She may have had her drink spiked, be dehydrated, have alcoholic poisoning.

‘If I was the female in this position, regardless of how familiar I am with the married man I would wonder at the very least why he’s choosing to be the hero instead of getting me medical help.’

She wrote: ‘I’ve gone over. She’s in bed, wildly drunk but able to speak. Not in any danger. By the amount of vomit all over her house, there’s nothing left in her anyway. Poor girl, what a thing to walk up to.

‘I’ve collected my husband (who was sat in his trousers and a towel, she’d been so sick through his shirt he had to take it off) and he’s now showering it off. What a night.’
