The bodybuilding community is in mourning after the death of former Mr Olympia competitor Neil Currey, who tragically passed away on Monday at the age of 34.

Currey’s former coach Milos Sarcev took to social media to announce the tragic news, describing it as ‘heartbreaking’ and ‘absolutely shocking’.

The cause of death has not been officially confirmed, however Sarcev’s initial Instagram post mentioned suicide, though this detail was later edited and removed.

Sarcev wrote: ‘Absolutely shocking, heartbreaking news – that my former athlete @neil_currey died today…taking his own life.

‘My last/best memory of him was this smiling face after he won New York Pro and fulfilled his lifetime dream of qualifying for the Mr. Olympia.

‘I am lost for words and filled with pain and sadness. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. RIP Neil and God bless your soul.’

Currey was born in the United Kingdom and began competing in bodybuilding in 2017 and finished fifth in the category of pro muscle at the World Championships.

He went on to compete against some of the best competitors in the world and in 2022 Currey finished first in the New York Pro and stamped his ticket to the  Mr. Olympia competition.

Later in the year, Currey got to live out his dreams on the Mr Olympia stage and ended up finishing 16th in the in the Classic Physique category.

Tributes have poured in online for Currey as news of his death emerged.

‘Hands down one of my most favourite bodybuilders. Taken away too soon,’ wrote one fan on X.

‘This is so sad. Thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends,’ wrote another.

Another fan posted on X: ‘What a tragic loss! That inspiration ever since my first thoughts into this bodybuilding world came from people like #NeilCurrey. That inspiration will never be lost! RIP one of the greatest!!!’

Prominent bodybuilding news site RX Muscle posted a message to Instagram: ‘Stunned and beyond saddened by the tragic news that Neil Currey has passed away at the young age of 34. We pass our most sincere and deepest condolences to Neil’s family, friends, and to all of his fans around the world.’

The death of Currey comes just days after the passing of women’s bodybuilding pioneer Lisa Lyon.
