Police believe it is possible a targeted attack is behind the homemade bomb that left a Queensland man seriously injured.

The victim sustained serious shrapnel wounds following the explosion of the improvised ‘bucket bomb’ in a home on Thursday evening.

The 52-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious leg and concussion injuries following the explosion in his own front yard at 5:30pm.

Police say initial information indicates the man had attempted to move a bucket that was in the front yard of his home in Logan when the bomb, hidden inside, detonated as he tried to move it.

The blast occurred on Jacaranda Avenue, a quiet residential street in Kingston, Logan

Specialist police and firefighters remain on the property as the investigation into the blast continues

Police have forensics teams working on the scene, but are still only in the early stages of the investigation. They aren’t completely sure what the explosive was made of but are confident it was a homemade explosive.

‘At this stage we’re still investigating what was contained in the device,’ a police spokesperson said.

The victim, identified by the Courier Mail as Andrew Doyle, is still in the Princess Alexandra hospital following surgeries last night with shrapnel injuries, police are yet to speak with him.

‘I think it’s a really lucky event that he hasn’t had any more significant injuries.

‘We do believe that it could possibly be a targeted event.

‘We don’t hold any concern for the wider community.’

Forensics teams are still working to establish the circumstances and details of the incident including the exact ingredients of the homemade bomb

The shrapnel has done damage to objects near to the bomb but no-one else has been identified as injured, including the victim’s partner who was also in the home but is unharmed.

Police recorded ‘some damage to fencing, the dwelling and a vehicle nearby,’ but have ruled out any reports of a second explosion.

‘Definitely no (second explosion), our investigations reveal just a single explosion, I don’t know how those noises would have penetrated across the suburb though.’

Police say they will include previous reports and incidents from the area in their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

‘(They) will form part of our investigation, we’ll canvas all of our intelligence holdings, any community reports… are relevant to this investigation.’

Police don’t believe the attack to be of concern to the wider community but are appealing for information from those who may have seen or heard anything that may be relevant to investigations on Thursday.

Police had declared an exclusion zone around the area to ensure the safety of others near the explosion in an order that has since been revoked

The house on Jacaranda Avenue, Kingston is still a crime scene as police continue to investigate the incident.

‘A crime scene remains in place with specialist police on scene,’ police said.

Queensland Police had earlier made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA), but the declaration has now been revoked.

Members of the public were told to avoid the area and those within the exclusion zone were asked to remain indoors until further notice as a result of the explosion.

A neighbour told Nine News that they heard a second explosion after the first.

‘After maybe three, four, five minutes, then the second explosion, it was very loud so we just ran away,’ a witness told Nine.

‘It was really loud.’

The victim was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital with serious lower leg and concussion injuries.

Police continue to seek witnesses and are appealing for information.
