Naked Sundays launches the world’s first SPF50+ serum in Australia

An Australian news reporter who launched a successful range of sell-out sunscreen mists, primers and lip oils that are earning her millions has just added a new product to her range – the world’s first SPF50+ serum.

Samantha Brett, who lives in Sydney, has been a journalist for over a decade, with a large part of that job standing outside for hours at a time in heavy makeup in the direct sun.

‘I witnessed two of my colleagues have to get skin cancers cut out of their faces, and when I tried to find a sunscreen I could use to top up my SPF over my makeup, there wasn’t anything out there,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

The idea for Naked Sundays was born out of sheer necessity and a belief that it was possible to develop SPF products that could be applied both under and over makeup without ruining your overall beauty look.

Thirteen months later and the SPF50 Clear Glow Radiant Sun Serum ($49.95) is now available, with a 50,000-strong waitlist preparing to receive the clear, non-sticky liquid formulation.

‘We wanted to create something that wasn’t yet on the Australian sunscreen market and that felt nothing like your typical stodgy, white, sticky, smelly sunscreen,’ Ms Brett said.

‘I came up with the idea of an entirely clear SPF that would work for all skin types after speaking constantly to our community who I engage with personally on a daily basis.

‘Also, it had to be SPF50, which is no easy feat, and means rigorous trialling and testing under the strictest standards sunscreen on the planet set by the TGA.

‘We have already had so much feedback from people who are trialling saying it is their new favourite SPF yet.’

The brand is well-known for its award-winning Hydrating Glow Mist ($39.95) which took three years to formulate, with many of the manufacturers she approached telling Ms Brett what she was trying to accomplish was impossible.

‘I wanted something that was high performance SPF and that could be used like a setting mist, but that was actually good for your skin and hydrating as well,’ she said.

‘I also am passionate about turning the statistics around when it comes to melanoma.

‘Millennials are most at risk and I figure if we can get the younger generation to change their habits now by making sunscreen cool, a bit sexy, fun and enjoyable to wear, we could help in a small way lower the high rates of melanoma in Australia.’

Worryingly two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they’re 70 and 2,000 Aussies die from melanomas every year.

Its warm weather year-round means Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

The glow mist had a waitlist of 2,500 people before it launched just a year ago, a huge feat for a company no one had ever heard of before.

‘We ended up having to launch two weeks early due to the demand! We then ended up doing an entire year’s forecast for the brand in the first month and have constantly sold out of our mist ever since,’ Ms Brett said.

With lilac packaging and metallic lettering the Naked Sundays mist and proceeding Mineral Perfecting Priming Lotion ($39.95), Hydrating Lip Oil ($29.95), Collagen Glow Creme ($34.95) and Glow Body Mist ($44.95) have certainly made their mark on the beauty industry.

None of the products leave a white cast on the skin, are sticky or smell overly fragranced, making them very easy to layer under or over your regular skin and makeup routine.

‘It gives you a blurring, airbrush effect which hides any fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and sun spots, so you don’t even need any makeup, and it has our signature vegan collagen in it as well, so you’re getting the anti-aging benefits as well as protection from the sun,’ she said.

‘Plus its 100 per cent natural SPF. It’s hard to believe it’s a mineral (which is typically white and sticky), because it has zero white cast and melts into the skin so perfectly you don’t even know you’re wearing it.’

When Naked Sundays was afforded the opportunity to have its products stocked in Mecca it sold out three months worth of stock for the mist and mineral primer in just 24 hours.

‘We’ve had to multiply our supply chain by 12 and aren’t even a year old yet so there are really exciting times ahead,’ she said.

As a mother to a four-year-old girl Ms Brett’s focus on spreading sunscreen-positive messages through the brand isn’t just business, it’s personal.

‘If we are going to change the way an entire generation uses and sees sunscreen, we need to make sure that they love what they’re using,’ she said.

While it’s still early days for the blossoming brand there are exciting new product releases in the pipeline that have ‘never been done anywhere else in the world’.
