Naomi Watts reveals the ‘mortifying’ moment she wouldn’t stop kissing fellow A-list actor during audition

Naomi Watts has detailed an embarassing audition that left her blushing when a kissing scene went awry.

The Australian-British actress tells the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter that she was doing a ‘chemistry test’ with the A-list actor, who she did not name, with the pair sharing a smooch.

It turned into a lengthy make-out session – but entirely by accident.

‘It was mortifying because we didn’t hear a “cut,” and it just kept going,’ the 55-year-old told the publication.

‘Then they were like, “OK, OK.” And we both were like, “Oh, sorry, we didn’t hear…” I did feel a bit rattled.’

Chemistry tests, also known as chemistry reads, are used during the casting process to see if two actors, often in romantic roles, have good on-screen chemistry.

Naomi said that she finds chemistry tests ‘impossible’ and despite her efforts, she did not land the role in the end.

‘I was auditioning, and I didn’t get the job, so clearly I did not do a good make-out’ she admitted.

Despite claiming she was ‘shockingly bad’ at auditions early in her  acting journey, Naomi has gone on to have a stellar career.

Watts spent the winter executive producing and starring in Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s big-screen adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s 2018 National Book Award-winning novel The Friend alongside Ann Dowd, Bill Murray, Constance Wu, and Carla Gugino.

She plays a Manhattan writer who inherits a 150lb Great Dane called Apollo (played by Bing) after her best friend and mentor commits suicide in the drama about loss.

‘He really is gigantic,’ Naomi said on the January 24th episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

‘It’s not often that a dog has the starring role. He’s a special dog. Very lovable. He’s a good. I have to have all kinds of doggy trainings. You know, every 20 minutes, we have to go through all of these – these tricks. He can do a lot of things.’

In February, Watts signed on to star as the elegant and charming wife of a potential Nazi officer living secretly in Queens in Ben Shirinian’s 1964-set psychological drama The Housewife alongside Norman Reedus, Tye Sheridan, and Michael Imperioli.

Last December, the I Am Stripes founder wrapped a mystery role in Audrey Diwan’s erotic drama Emmanuelle, which is a remake of Just Jaeckin’s 1974 cult flick.

Naomi will also eventually reprise her role as Nora Brannock in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s mystery thriller The Watcher, which was renewed by Netflix for a second season back in 2022.
