The NBA has announced fines and suspensions for several Houston Rockets and Miami Heat players after the two teams got into a heated brawl over the weekend.
The worst of the punishment was given to Rockets rookie Amen Thompson, who was suspended two games without pay. Heat guard Terry Rozier was also suspended without pay, but only for one game.
In addition, Rockets guard Jalen Green was fined $35,000 by the league and Heat guard Tyler Herro was fined $25,000 for his role in the brawl.
Rockets coach Ime Udoka was also fined $50,000 for ‘verbal abuse of a game official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his technical foul and ejection.’
Thompson will miss Houston’s January 1 game against the Dallas Mavericks and the January 3 game against the Boston Celtics. Rozier will miss the Heat’s January 1 game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
The altercation happened with 35 seconds remaining in the game. Miami was up five points and was about to inbound the ball.
The NBA has suspended and fined players involved in a fight in the Rockets-Heat game
Houston’s Amen Thompson (L) was suspended two games, Miami’s Terry Rozier (R) was suspended for one game for their roles in the altercation on Sunday
Additionally, Houston’s Jalen Green (L) and Miami’s Tyler Herro (R) received heavy fines
Herro was lined up as the first option to receive the ball, while Thompson was guarding him closely.
Thompson hooked Herro’s arm in a way that would have been called a foul before the play began, with the Heat star not taking kindly to the physical contact.
Herro and Thompson grab each other’s jerseys and just as security, fellow players, and coaches are about to separate the two, Thompson slams Herro to the hardwood floor.
A mass confrontation broke out with the squads being separated quickly, but not before Thompson and Herro exchange words while being restrained.
Herro, Thompson, two Rockets coaches, including head coach Ime Udoka, Jalen Green, and Terry Rozier were all ejected from the game.
After the game, Herro commented on the situation, with the Heat winning the game 104-100 over the Rockets.
‘Guess that’s what happens when someone’s scoring, throwing dimes, doing the whole thing. I’d get mad too,’ Herro said.
The teams do meet once more this season with a game in Miami on March 21.
