NBA star Jaylen Brown fined over throat slash gesture

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown has been fined $25,000 by the NBA after making a throat slash gesture towards an opponent on court.

Brown, who helped the Celtics win the NBA Championship last season, made the gesture towards the Detroit Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart on Wednesday.

And two days on from the game, the 28-year-old has now been hit with a hefty fine by the league.

NBA executive vice president and head of communications Joe Dumars announced on Friday that Brown is being penalized over the ‘inappropriate’ gesture he made in Boston’s clash with Detroit.

Brown led Wednesday’s game with 28 points as the Celtics earned a 130-120 victory over the Pistons.

The gesture to Stewart occurred right before the end of the first quarter when he threw down a two-handed dunk against the Pistons power forward. Brown then stared at Stewart for a few moments before moving his hand against his throat.

The 2024 NBA Finals MVP was then quizzed about it in his postgame press conference.

He said: ‘Just caught up in the moment I guess. Big play. I think that the NBA and [Players’ Association] are sensitive about the gestures and things like that. So you got to be mindful of that.’

When asked if he expected to hear from the league, Brown admitted: ‘Oh yeah.’

The shooting guard is in his ninth season in Boston after being selected by the Celtics with the third overall pick at the 2016 NBA Draft.

He is averaging 25.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 17 games this season.

A three-time All-Star, Brown is contributing 18.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 557 career games (450 starts) with the Celtics.
