Championship bottom club Barnsley are reportedly keen to appoint Neil Warnock as manager as they desperately fight for survival.

The Tykes are currently eight points adrift of safety in the second tier, with just two league victories to their name all season.

Former Sweden Under-21 boss Poya Asbaghi replaced Markus Schopp at the helm in November, but is yet to win a Championship fixture and is under increasing pressure.

Neil Warnock has hinted that he could take on a final managerial job until the end of the season

73-year-old Warnock is now being considered as an option by the South Yorkshire club, according to The Sun.

The report adds that the veteran boss is keen on a return to management, having left Middlesbrough three months ago.

Speaking on Sky Sports last weekend, Warnock hinted that he would be open to taking on a job until the end of the season.

‘I am going to pack it in at the end of this season,’ he said. ‘That was always planned.

‘But I might still get a few games under my belt between now and then.

‘When a team loses two or three games, I get mentioned! I’ve been mentioned with six or seven clubs since I packed it in.’

Warnock holds the record for the most games managed in English professional football with 1,603 – achieved at spells at 16 different clubs.

He spent two years at Barnsley as a player in the 1970s, making 57 league appearances for the Oakwell outfit.

After competing in the Championship playoffs last season, the Tykes are enduring a dreadful campaign this time around and have lost their last five league games in a row.
