Nespresso rival Espresso Club can use George Clooney lookalike

Nespresso rival can use George Clooney lookalike: Israeli firm Espresso Club wins right to broadcast commercial mocking Hollywood star’s ad campaign

  • Appeal by Nespresso to take down rival Espresso Club ads has been dismissed
  • Nespresso alleged the ads had infringed on copyright with Clooney look-a-like
  • Hollywood’s George Clooney is a global brand ambassador for Nespresso
  • Light-hearted Espresso Club ad shows man with strong resemblance to Clooney

Nespresso rival brand Espresso Club has upheld the right to use a George Clooney look-a-like in its advert.

The provocative commercial depicts a man with an uncanny resemblance to the famous Hollywood heart-throb.

It is intended as a light-hearted spoof of the Nespresso ads, which feature Clooney as their global brand ambassador.

Nespresso alleged that Bnei Brak-based Espresso Club had infringed on its copyrights by putting the commercial to air.

However the Supreme Court of Israel on August 7 dismissed an appeal by the company.

The appeal was filed to challenge a previous decision by Tel Aviv District Court Judge Magen Altuvia in 2017, who ruled: ‘The use made by Espresso Club in its advertisements of an image of Clooney is legitimate and sophisticated and does not involve any violation of Nespresso copyright.’

Last week’s Supreme Court decision upheld the ruling.

The supposedly comic Espresso Club ad shows the George Clooney look-a-like walking out of a store dressed in a fancy suit and saying to himself ‘There’s nothing like a new espresso machine’ as he notices an attractive woman walk past.

The next moment a man appears in front of him, snapping his fingers while telling him: ‘Hey, stop talking to yourself, you’re being towed.’

‘But I left my car with the valet,’ the Clooney double says in English.

‘No bro, with the parking officer,’ the Israeli man says as his towed car whizzes past.

‘Wait wait wait, you mean you don’t have to pay for the machine? That’s crazy,’ says the Clooney double.

The man replies: ‘And to dress like a groom to go to a coffee store — that’s not ‘crazy’ at all?’
