Net migration hits a record high, official statistics reveal

Net migration hit a record high of 504,000 in the year to June, new figures reveal – with most arrivals from Ukraine, Afghanistan and Hong Kong

Net migration to the UK hit 504,000 in the year to June – a more than 50 per cent increase on last year and the highest level on record, official figures revealed today.

Officials said the increase has been driven by hundreds of thousands of refugees from Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Ukraine being given the right to live in the UK.

The numbers are far above Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s pledge to reduce net migration to the ‘tens of thousands’.

Rishi Sunak has said he wants to reduce overall net migration but refused to set an ‘arbitrary number’.
