Netball great Liz Ellis reveals just how close she came to quitting her TV career… before reality producers called her with a life-changing offer

Liz Ellis has revealed she wanted to quit TV before her triumphant appearance on last year’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

The former netball great, 50, had given up her career as a sports commentator just days before she was lured into the jungle as a contestant by producers.

She ended up winning the reality show and walking away with $100,000 for her chosen charity and is now set to co-host Channel 10’s Gladiator reboot.

‘I’d finished my contract with Channel Nine at the end of 2021, the netball rights had left Nine and gone to Fox, and I thought, this is the perfect time to have a break and think about what I want to do next,’ she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

The mother-of-two explained when she took the call from a producer at 10 she was looking for a ‘normal’ non-media job.

Liz Ellis has revealed she wanted to quit TV before her triumphant appearance on last year’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

She initially turned down the offer to appear as a contestant on the show, until her family helped change her mind.

‘My daughter was like ”You have to! Why not?”. I said ”Well I worry about what people will think about me” and then she was like ”Well you’re always telling me not to worry about what other people think”.

‘You teach your kids those lessons and they throw them back at you and the next minute, you’re in the jungle.

‘So I realised then that 2023 was the year to take risks and do things that I would never normally do to get out of my comfort zone.’

It was a major change of pace for Liz, who had been living the quiet life on her farm in regional NSW with husband Matthew Stocks and their children – daughter Evelyn, 12 and son, Austin, seven.

Appearing on The Project shortly after her I’m A Celebrity win last year, Liz described her time filming in the jungle as ‘best month of her life’ and said winning $100,000 for charity was a ‘surreal’ experience.

She beat out boxer Harry Garside for the crown in a nail biting finale.

A thrilled Liz couldn’t believe her luck, and looked truly moved and stunned as she took her seat on the throne.

‘Oh, my gosh. Finally, I’m a queen!’ she joked, before making her way out onto the podium.

Liz will continue her run on reality TV by appearing on Channel 10’s Gladiator reboot.

The Aussie sporting icon will join Beau Ryan from The Amazing Race to co-host the revival of the extreme sports show which will have its premiere on January 15.
