Netflix ‘tones down sex scenes for Bridgerton series two’

Netflix has decided to curb the number of sex scenes in Bridgerton as it features just three minutes of raunchy moments in the upcoming second series.

The racy period drama became well-known for its steamy scenes in season one, primarily featuring Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and The Duke Of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page).

But according to The Sun, fans can expect a tamer romance between new lead characters Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), as their flirtation ‘doesn’t progress beyond a nearly kiss’.

Change: Netflix have reportedly decided to curb the number of sex scenes in the upcoming second series of Bridgerton

It is understood there will be just three minutes of sex scenes in the upcoming series while it is believed viewers will have to wait until the end of episode seven for a real raunchy scene.

Defending toning down on sex scenes in the series, creator Chris Van Dusen said: ‘It was never about quantity for us and our approach to intimacy on the show was the same as season one.’

He said they use intimate scenes to ‘push a story forward’, adding: ‘We’ve never done a sex scene for the sake of doing a sex scene and I don’t think we ever will.

‘It all serves a larger purpose and it’s a different story this season and different characters, we’re with Anthony and Kate most of the season and that’s very different from Daphne and Simon. It’s a different story.’

Actress Ashley, who plays Kate said sex scenes in the show are not ‘performative’ and are instead ‘earnt’ when they do occur.

While Jonathan, 33, added: ‘I think Kate and Anthony feel explicit in the way that they feel naked in front of each other. And it’s a very cerebral way of exploring that sort of innate sexuality.

‘And I think it bodes very well for the following seasons to just not be expected for it to just be about the sex.’

Speaking about the romance between Kate and Anthony, a source told The Sun that their romance never progresses beyond ‘flirtation and a nearly kiss’.

They added: ‘Devotees who loved the racy show’s first helping were probably hoping the follow-up would contain more sex, not less.

‘Most of the bedroom scenes were previously supplied by Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton and Rege-Jean Page as her husband, the Duke of Hastings. But he doesn’t appear in series two and she is more of a background character.

‘Now all the romance revolves around Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan, and new character Kate Sharma, played by Simone. But their lust never progresses beyond flirtation and a nearly kiss.’

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Netflix for comment.

Based on a series of books of the same name by Julia Quinn, the Netflix show follows the eight siblings of the Bridgerton family as they attempt to find love in Regency-era England.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, recently teased what fans can expect from her character in the new series.

Speaking on Claudia Winkleman’s BBC Radio 2 show, she said: ‘(After) that reveal at the end of series one, you very much get to see behind the curtain in series two.

‘We see how she gets away with the things that she gets away with. And for me, it was so much fun because in series one she’s a shy, retiring wallflower, and then series two you go, ‘Oh, she’s got all this new stuff going on’, and it was extremely fun to film.’

Speaking of the show’s success, she said: ‘It’s absolutely bonkers how many people sort of fell in love with it. It’s amazing.’

She said: ‘Pre-lockdown it was just our little job we were going to and then you go, ‘Oh, I’ve seen this one on Netflix’. But we were all just really excited to get back.’
