A new poll has revealed that 54 per cent of Americans now approve of impeachment proceedings against President Trump

A new poll has revealed that 54 per cent of Americans now approve of impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

About one-in-ten adults who initially opposed the proceedings last month now approve of the decision to conduct an impeachment inquiry.

The new survey by Pew Research Center polled 3,487 adults and found that most of those who had opposed opening impeachment proceedings and now approve are Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (61 per cent) and roughly a third (32 per cent) are Republicans.

Some 43 per cent believed that the Republicans in Congress would be fair in handling the inquiry and 47 per cent said the same about Democrats in Congress.

The new findings come just one day after it was revealed that 52 per cent of Americans supported Trump’s removal.

It is the first time that the respected pollsters have registered a majority of Americans supporting the removal of a president since August 1974, when 58 per cent supported the removal of Richard Nixon.

The news came just a week after Fox News published a poll finding that 51% of Americans agreed that Trump should be impeached and removed from office, a nine-point jump from the most recent survey on July 19.

The president was furious at the Fox poll, tweeting: ‘From the day I announced I was running for President, I have NEVER had a good @FoxNews Poll.

‘Whoever their Pollster is, they suck. But @FoxNews is also much different than it used to be in the good old days.’

An earlier wave of the survey, conducted in early September before details about Trump’s call with Ukrainian Presdient Volodymr Zelensky were made public, 50 per cent said they favored the House launching impeachment proceedings.

A whopping 93 per cent of Democrats say that Trump has definitely or probably done things that are grounds for impeachment.

While a smaller majority of Republicans (80 per cent) say he hasn’t.

And fewer than half of Republicans say Trump definitely hasn’t done things that are grounds for impeachment.
