New Ritz cracker boxes leaves Coles Australia shoppers shocked

Shopper stunned at ‘infuriating’ detail on new Ritz cracker boxes at the supermarket: ‘This isn’t fair’

  • A Coles customer was unimpressed by small change to Ritz crackers box
  • The shopper noticed the box size has decreased
  • But claims the price has remained the same

A customer was furious after noticing a subtle change to Ritz cracker boxes during their shop at Coles.

Sharing an image on Twitter, the shopper compared the size of two boxes – one older box consisting of 300g and the newer box consisting of 227g.

Despite the change in size the woman claims the price remained the same and was prompted to alerted other shoppers.

‘Coles – smaller packet, bigger price tag! Wtf! Greed, not inflation,’ the woman wrote.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Mondelez, that company behind Ritz crackers, for comment.

A second shopper also noticed the difference in size and shared a similar image to the Coles Cooking Club Facebook group.

‘Shrinkage factor. 300g down to 227g,’ the woman wrote.

Others joined the conversation and couldn’t believe the price didn’t change.

‘Do they really think we won’t notice?’ one wrote, another said: ‘Prices up, quantities down.’

‘Noticed this too and wasn’t impressed.. at the end of the day the customer is unhappy so not sure about the marketing tactic used here,’ a third added.

By STEPHEN JOHNSON, ECONOMICS REPORTER FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA

Australia’s cost of living crisis has worsened with inflation hitting a new 32-year high of 7.8 per cent.

The consumer price index in the year to December surged at the fastest annual pace since the March quarter of 1990, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers describing it as ‘unacceptably high’.

This means another interest rate rise on February 7 is almost a certainty with headline inflation well above the Reserve Bank’s 2 to 3 per cent target.

In attempt to reduce inflation, the cost of groceries, mortgage rates and petrol has increased significantly over the last seven months

A spokesperson from Mondelez told 7Life: ‘Due to the rising costs that many manufacturers are facing, we have made the difficult decision to adjust the recommended size of RITZ Original & Cracked Pepper.’

‘This ensures we can continue to deliver the highest quality crackers our fans know and love.

‘We know this will disappoint some, however, we’re committed to providing Australians the same high-quality and great tasting RITZ Crackers.’
