New Town, Hobart: Man dies after being found unconscious following suspected hit and run

A man has died after he was found unconscious in the middle of a street following a suspected hit and run.

Tasmanian Detective Inspector David Gill said the man in his 50s was found unconscious on Swanston Street in the northern Hobart suburb of New Town at about 2.50am on Friday.

The man had suffered ‘significant injuries to his torso and neck area’.

He was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery but he could not be saved.

Police believe the man was struck by a 4WD. 

‘Throughout today, detectives have undertaken numerous enquiries including extensive door knocking and collection of CCTV, to determine the movements of the man early this morning and how he sustained his injuries,’ Inspector Gill said on Friday.

‘Late this afternoon police seized the 4WD vehicle believed to have been involved. The vehicle will now be forensically examined.

‘Two people who were allegedly in the vehicle at the time it was on Swanston St this morning are assisting police with their inquiries.’

No charges have been laid. 

The 50-year-old was spotted on CCTV at the Kmart Plaza with another man, who has been interviewed by police.

He’s no longer considered a person of interest, with investigations ongoing. 

‘The police investigation is ongoing, and I ask anyone with information to come forward,’ Inspector Gill said.
