New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso has reportedly hired baseball super agent Scott Boras ahead of his contract season, leading to speculation that the All-Star first baseman could be traded in the coming months or leave as a free agent in 2024.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Thursday morning that Alonso is hiring BorasCorp to represent him.

It’s significant news for Mets fans who may have otherwise hoped to see Alonso re-signed before hitting the free-agent market following the 2024 season.

Boras, considered the most powerful agent in baseball, is notoriously opposed to signing extensions in players’ walk years.

The good news for Mets fans is that Boras appears to have a good working relationship with team after negotiating free-agent deals for Max Scherzer (three years, $130 million), Brandon Nimmo (eight years, $162 million), and Carlos Correa, whose 12-year, $315 million deal ultimately unraveled over an issue with the shortstop’s physical.
