Ms Ardern, who was due to give birth on June 17, has not publicly revealed the sex of her baby.

The 37-year-old worked right up until she went into labour, but she is expected to take maternity leave.

‘I do not want to create a false impression that all women should be super-human or super-women,’ she said.

‘I am able to do what I’m doing because I have enormous support around me and it makes me quite privileged.’

The 37-year-old will become a mother just months after she took the country’s top job in October.

Ms Ardern announced she was pregnant in a Facebook post in January this year.

‘I’ll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be ‘first man of fishing’ and stay-at-home dad,’ she wrote on Facebook

‘I think it’s fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise but we couldn’t be more excited.’

Ardern will follow in the footsteps of the late Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who in 1990 became the only women in recorded history to give birth while in power.
