Sold for a Bedrock-bottom price! House inspired by the Flintstones and described as a ‘disaster’ by real estate agent sells for a fraction of its value

  • New Zealand’s ugliest home has been sold for nearly half its $910,000 value
  • The bizarre Flintstones-inspired home in Auckland looks like a giant, white igloo
  • It boasts a strange blue kitchen, curved white walls and a bright green window
  • Investors snapped up the house for just $485,000 last month

An unusual Flintstones-inspired house has sold for the rock-bottom price of $485,000.

The bizarre home, which would look more suitable in the fictional town of Bedrock than suburban Auckland, New Zealand, was valued at $910,000 but failed to meet this at auction.

In the shape of a large, white igloo, the house in the suburb of Mt Roskill was even described as a ‘disaster’ by the estate agent trying to sell it.

Eventually, its buyers – who are rumoured to be investors planning to turn it to rubble – snapped it up for nearly half its estimated value.

The Flintstones home is curved with rough walls painted in a variety of unusually bright colours, making it a cartoon-like abode for a fun-loving family.

The house boasts high ceilings and large, circular windows.

The ‘igloo’ is a granny flat attached to a five-bedroom home, which suffers from leaks – leaving one previous owner forced to move because of health problems.

The attachment has a curved ceiling, porthole-style windows and a bright blue kitchen.

Upstairs is a large bedroom, with a green window and a wooden ceiling.

Sellers Barfoot and Thompson had billed it as ‘a disaster turned developer’s opportunity’.

‘Forget about the $910,000 CV – we are talking “land and value” only here,’ the advertisement said.

‘Disaster No 1: there is no code compliance certificate Issued for the current dwelling.”

‘Disaster No 2: this dwelling has major water ingress issues.’

‘The master dwelling offers four bedrooms, and two bathrooms (including ensuite), but unfortunately requires major recladding or perhaps even demolishing.

‘Plus – there is a second connecting minor “Flintstone-style” dwelling which has one bedroom and one bathroom.

‘Don’t delay your plans. This vendor is most eager and ready to sell.’

Its  seller Alex Yang of Barfoot and Thompson told Stuff any buyer would most likely be paying for the land rather than the building.

‘I do think the buyer will have to demolish the house,’ he said.
