  • Authorities have launched search for mother as they are concerned for her

A newborn baby boy understood to be less than 24-hours-old has been found abandoned outside a medical centre in Western Australia.

The baby was left in a box covered by a blanked outside Garden City Medical Centre on Davy Street in Booragoon, Perth, about about 8am on Wednesday morning.

Authorities have launched an urgent search for the mother as they are concerned for her welfare.

Police are asking for the mother to contact them or the Department of Community Services as they believe she may require medical attention.

The baby, which appears to be in good health, has been taken to Perth Children’s Hospital for assessment.

‘The baby was found abandoned outside a medical centre,’ a WA Police spokeswoman told reporters.

‘The baby is fine… he’s doing well and he was taken to Perth Children’s Hospital for assessment.’

A note was left with the newborn baby and police suggest the mother wanted the child to be looked after.

‘The baby was found in a box covered with a blanket. The baby appeared to be cared for,’ the police spokeswoman said.

Police believe the child is less than 24-hours-old and had only been left outside the medical centre for about 10 minutes before he was found.

More to come.
